Departure from Pisa for the visit of the city of Siena.

Located in the heart of Tuscany and surrounded by hills, it is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy. Fulcrum of the city is the famous Piazza del Campo, with its particular shell shape, in which the famous Palio is held, one of the most important appointments for all the Sienese. The Palio di Siena is a passionate horse race that takes place every year, in July and August and its origins seem to date back as far as the seventeenth century.

The Campo is dominated by the red Palazzo Pubblico and its tower, called Torre del Mangia. The Palazzo Pubblico, as well as the Duomo of Siena, was built during the Government of the Nine, which was the period of maximum economic and cultural splendor of Siena. The Palace still houses the offices of the Municipality. From the inner courtyard of the Palace you can access the Civic Museum (inside which some of the most beautiful paintings of the Sienese school are kept) and the Torre del Mangia, on top of which, having climbed the 500 steps, you can enjoy a splendid view of the city. Lunch in a restaurant.

On the way back we will stop at the Monteriggioni Castle where we could take a walk through the streets and small squares of the village.

Monteriggioni is one of the most significant fortified villages in the area. It has remained incredibly intact as if time had never passed on that hill, from where elegantly laid, it dominates the whole surrounding landscape. The intact city wall is composed of 14 towers and 2 doors. The Porta Franca or Romea facing Rome and the Porta Fiorentina facing Florence. The structure of the village as we see it today can be considered essentially the original one, the only modifications to which it was subjected date back to the sixteenth century (the towers were adapted to the new firearms and the earth was added to the base of the external walls) and to the 1921, when 3 of the 14 towers were lowered to the level of the walls. Every year, inside the walls of the town, a special event is celebrated in July: the “Medieval Festival” of Monteriggioni, one of the most beautiful and plausible medieval re-enactments in the region. The city flies back in time to medieval times, the streets are filled with artisans, noble knights, commoners in costumes to give life to an exciting atmosphere.

    Expected return in the evening.
