The first official date of the Luminara is March 25, 1688 when in the chapel of the Cathedral of Pisa, the urn containing the body of Ranieri degli Scaccieri, patron saint of the city, died in 1161 was solemnly placed. Cosimo III dei Medici had wanted the the ancient urn containing the relic was replaced with a more modern and magnificent one. The transfer of the urn was the occasion for a memorable town festival during which the city was illuminated by candles to allow the passage of the procession: hence the name “Lighting”, which later became “Luminara”. An extraordinary Luminara was organized in September 1989 on the occasion of the visit to Pisa of Pope John Paul II. Free dinner.

At the end return to the B&B for overnight stay.

Breakfast at the B&B and in the morning departure for Pisa for the feast of the Patron Saint Ranieri: appointment with the traditional fair that will unfold from Piazza dei Miracoli to Piazza dei Cavalieri. The stalls will exhibit objects of handicraft, ethnic, sweets and products of every kind. The fair will take place from 8.00 am to 8.30 pm.

Lunch in a trattoria / pizzeria. At the end, we will visit the Museum of Ancient Ships: in 1998, on the outskirts of Pisa, towards the sea, the Railways began work on the construction of a control center for the Rome-Genoa line alongside the Pisa San station Redness. Immediately emerged wooden objects of which the archaeologists understood the exceptional importance. An incredible series of shipwrecks in an exceptional state of conservation emerged at six meters depth, with their loads of commercial products and the testimonies of life on board. From that discovery the Shipyard of the Roman Ships of Pisa was born, concluded in 2016, opened in 2019, which returned about thirty boats from the Roman era and miles of ceramic fragments, glass, metals, elements in organic material. It is one of the most interesting and rich excavation and research sites in recent years. Duration of the visit about an hour and a half. At the end, except for time changes not dependent on our organization, at 6.00 pm we will see the departure from the Town Hall of the procession of the attendants of the Palio di San Ranieri that will cross Lungarno Mediceo with arrival at the Renaioli port. At 7.00 pm the parade on the Arno river of the ‘frigates’ of the districts with the exhibition of the San Ranieri altarpiece.

At 7.30 pm start of the Palio di San Ranieri with the arrival at the Scalo dei Renaioli. Each ‘frigate’ is composed of eight rowers, the helmsman and the fitter. The latter, at the finish line, has the task of climbing up one of the 4 canapi that reach the top of a 10 meter high flagpole and grab the blue palio, symbol of victory. Two (symbolic) ducks, on the other hand, represent the little coveted recognition for the last classified. This particular method of awarding the victory is inspired by the undertaking of Lepanto when the Christian troops, once approached the Turkish flagship, took possession of the fighting flame placed on the flagstone of the Saracen boat. “
